Special note on an excellent support from sabrent - i had a problem with the initial order - the device stopped working after few hours.

Just open the shrink-wrap, plug the usb into the laptop, plug the hdmi into the hdmi->dvi adapter and done.

Competitiveness
This worked great and much cheaper than a new laptop/screen.
I've also used displaylink products on windows desktops via usb3 where they are exceptionally useful.
I bought two of the subject sabrent device sold by store4pc and fulfilled by amazon.

This gem cranked up found and self installed newupdated drivers and bingo it was working

And one can get it to work under linux although it is a bit tricky and i would only recommend it for advanced users
