This unit overall is a keeper. It has a retro 70's * to the look of it. One caveat. Distance is the key!
The sound is quite acceptable for a compact recorder. Operation is similar to the reel to reel of bygone days. Sounds great hooked up to my vintage stereo as an external mp3 player and built in stereo mics work great.

Sangean provides the following information in the owners manual that sounds contradictory. Qa is worse than i thought it was if i can receive 2 defective units.
Sangean uses some arcane file coding which i was unable to convert to anything else, or even play outside the recorder, a major disappointment. The recorder has a number of things going for it, but it has some glaring issues.

And also there are lights that turn on when the call begins recording so you will either have to put the device somewhere hidden or cover up the lights

I put a bit of black electrical tape over the lights and placed the unit with my stereo equipment and nobody has noticed yet

When i need to record a phone call i can just leave it plugged in into any phone jack of the same line it will turn on when i start and stop when i hang up
