Pros & Cons
Pros
White shell, dark brown padding, and matte chrome accent makes it look so luxurious. They fit comfortably snug on me, but someone with a head on the wider side might find them tight.
Where the 599 really shines is how fashionable it looks. The hd599 keeps the energetic (and bass light) sound of the hd598. Their predecessor the 560s are mildly superior in their clarity.
Excellent entry level product into the audiophile space. The dac removes the issues of pc connections and allows me to use a spectacular analog amp. I listen to spotify via lg v40 with it's quad d.
The soundstage is what i've been seeking and missing with closed back and in-ears. Quiet sounds are delicate and well placed while explosions are thunderous.
Joshua bells stradivarius sounds superb on amazon hd. Schory’s new percussion ensemble has your senses tracking all over the stage! Hearing the space between parts of the music, details i'd never picked up before, it's all exceptionally enjoyable.
Cons
The soundstage is the worst i've ever heard in my life. Sound is distant and thin/hollow. Guitar/vocal songs sound empty.
Not worth the $99 on prime day, much less its $300 msrp. Honestly while these are functional headphones there is no reason to get these over the 598's or spend more and get the 650's. It makes me think a little less of both amazon as well as sennheise... Read More
Overpriced product with garbage proprietary connections. Looks like another product made cheaper just for amazon. It tends to be hard to review an item after a few years.
Due to poor design, the adapter is like 4in long. Will bend if bumped or nugged. Wouldn't survive a firm head shake, jogging or running.
Highlights
Quality
Great sound quality and balanced tone, moderately wide soundstage.
The chords are super easy to switch out and the headphones are really sturdy.
I need to use an adapter to get them to work on my pc, and the adapter just quit after 3 years and i had to go back to my noise... Read More
These are indeed open ear, and offer zero isolation.
Price
Best bang for the buck i've ever had.
The hd599 are definitely worth the present price of $129.
I caught them below $90 and pulled the trigger.
This particular model is perpetually on sale.
Packaging/appearance
-- the box is nice and the custom cushion inside to protect the product is a nice touch so its not bouncing around during delivery.
Competitiveness
I'm very happy with both and sennheiser is a brand i will stick with in the future.
They are easily comparable to my old setup at less than half the cost with no amplifier needed and 100x more comfortable.
After a couple of weeks of comparing, the hd660s won out and the hd599 went back.
If i were to rate this headset against other headsets of higher prices then it would get a 4 star, the sound quality would be t... Read More
