Pros & Cons
Pros
The 24-70mm f/2. Is a great lens for portraiture. It feels great on my d700, and seems to balance it out nicely. On my dx camera (nikon d90), it's ~75mm-equivalent which is just how you want a portrait lens to be. The only con is maybe price, this is ... Read More
The bokeh this lens creates is beautifully smooth, and the lens has great color and contrast. The pictures it produces seem to have a little more oomph. The sigma smooths out the background, including bright lights, and produces a pleasing blur.
The hood is a solid plastic with 2 large petals at the 12 and 6 position with 2 smaller ones at 3 & 9pm. The hood snaps into place smoothly with a slight effort followed by a snap once it twisted in fully. I like how the lens handles.
Focus testing [. I find the af speed just as fast as other lenses i've used (nikon). Auto focus is fast and precise. A large aperture lens like this is all about finding light.
Sigma 50mm 1. F/1. Is much sharper than the nikon 50mm f1. The colors are more neutral possibly due to coating. The lens is unusual for a 50mm as they are typically rather small. The af on this lens is hands down faster then the nikon 100mm 1/2 f/2.
Cons
Lenses from sigma and minolta are not as good as canon lenses. Sigma lens is not compatible with nikon d3100. Sigma has not issued a recall or updated the lens before retail. Sigma lenses are not available in the u.

I ordered this from amazon originally but had to return it because at the time i hit the buy button too fast.
I received my copy on saturday and have used it on my nikon d800.
Packaging/appearance
I am very pleased with the quality of the packaging and the lens.
I took it out of the box today and put it on my nikon d300 and was blown away by the quality of pictures i was getting with it.
, both new copies were the smooth paint and had the print "works with d5300" on the box.
The lens comes in a cardboard box.
