Skyward is the first book of a ya series by one of my favourite authors. Sophie aldridge really breaths life into our protagonist spencer. Spencers bravado is quite possibly thr biggest reason to read these books.

This book is full of bravery and stubbornness. I was gripped from the start and haven't put rulebook down.

M-bot, a conscious and talking ship, adds an element of humour to an otherwise grave situation by commenting on humanity at irrelevant times. Spensa nightshade (spin) serves as an ally and sounding board for her pilot friend.

The book also just throws in the idea of a military government to hit that trope but not actually address it in the broader context of the book. Explosions in space are loud in this book, starfighters fight like 2ww dogfights at supersonic speeds.
