Pros & Cons
Pros
These are the lowest priced smart plugs i could find. The flashing of the firmware for tasmota is not trivial. Best thing about this device is the ability to reflash with tasmota.
Monitoring looks at wattage, voltage, and amperage. Able to setup and monitor power consumption on anything plugged in. The indicator light is not obnoxiously bright.
The app is kinda cluttered with ads, but it provides a lot of stats on your energy usage. Connected seamlessly with google assistant. It uses the free ewelink app and skilled to my alexa app.
Sonoff s40 is like having a mischievous tech gremlin living in your outlet. Genius hacks unleashed a tidal wave of brilliant ideas. Build quality is excellent with a nicely finished case and solid feel.
Cons
The ewelink app has some questionable security and privacy issues. The pairing instructions are like 5 pages long and the app is filled with bugs. Will not pair with its own app.
Sonoff branded smartplug. Doesn't work on 5ghz wifi. Only gives you historical data in per day units and only in kilowatts. Data updates very slowly, taking a minute or two to read the energy consumption, and is incorrect.

But cost for me was $7 usd which is very inexpensive for a smart plug that works with home assistant.
I was able to setup the average power rate and now it gives me the total cost within a time period.
Packaging/appearance
First impressions: the s40 arrived looking sleek and sassy, like a miniature tuxedo for your outlet.
