Quality
This game made a young man very happy.
It's probably more fun if you have friends you play with.
With the money you earn from battles you can buy shoes, shirt, hair, glasses, bandana etc.
I received splatoon in october (2015) and i have to say i am impressed!
Competitiveness
Even still, i heartily give this game a huge thumbs up and would recommend it to anyone looking to have a great time playing on their wiiu.
These were competitions held every month where you would be rewarded with super sea snails, a type of currency for upgrading your clothing.
Ps: not having a team-speak ended up being a huge plus.

The maps in this game were really fun and well designed i dont find that to be the case as much in splatoon 2 and i cant quite put my finger on it

Also the fact that you have to sit through the news flashes every time you load up the game or you get through one of the 4 hour stage rotations

Though the 2 news anchors with their banter can be entertaining at first there are only so many times you really want to sit through the same dialogue over and over again and nintendo should have put the option to skip it

This is something splatoon 2 still has although you only have to watch it once when you start the game up

For new comers and my experience having only bought this game in early 2017 the fact that there will not be any more splat fest events in this game is a real bummer

Another downside and not one unique to splatoon is the fact that nintendo decided to take away the ability to post on miiverse their now abandoned in game social media outlet

The worst and biggest down side in splatoon of all is the fact that nintendo will eventually shut down the wii us online servers so there goes a big chunk of the game right there and ill be sad the day that happens to pass
