When i got the new register it was literally a mere 1434 wider than the existing spacenot enough to justify spending more than 20 on an attachment for my dremel or some other more expensive electric cutting tool

Its properly called a jamb saw or undercut saw

If you have oak maple or some other hardwood door frames lucky you you probably have a more durable sturdily built older house to go along with them

In that case it would be best to use an oscillating power saw not this one
