You're buying an heirloom that will hold it's value for a very long time. Pricey but worth every penny. Amazon price can't be beat, especially for this forged & hardened model.
The quality is exceptional. Everything about it is finely finished, perfectly engineered, and beautiful. This is just a brilliant tool, and it's even more pleasing to me because it was manufactured in the usa.
The action is smooth, the gradients on the rule are precise and clear, and the quality is beyond compare.

They're expensive, but frankly i don't care.
Sometimes, it’s worth it to spend for the best.
Packaging/appearance
But the packaging and shipping container was a disaster.
I received it busting thru the outer wrapper and exposed, therefore lucky it wasn't seriously damaged.
Competitiveness
It's kind of like comparing a rolex to a cheap watch: both do the job, but the rolex is tight and everything is absolutely perfect.
I use this more than any other tool and it's worth the money .

I dumped all my crummy stanley squares not before measuring them against the starret and finding all of them out of square by some degree and with imprecise straight edges and now all of a sudden my marks all line up when i strike lines for throughmortises

The forged body and rule came polished and satin respectively and no touch of rust pitting or scratching has showed up after weeks of daily use and a few hard falls onto an oak deck that had my heart pounding until i realized just how bulletproof an allforged starret really is

You can make a straight cut with a 20 dollar saw and plane smooth with a 15 dollar yardsale stanley 4 but not if your measures are off
