Pros & Cons
Pros
The two chips on the pcb have no heat dissipation at all. There are some small issues that other reviewers have mentioned pertaining to the * 1.
New installations of 14. Gb. It runs windows 7. For the x1 carbon 2nd gen, windows 8. It works fine on windows 10. I typically run 2 monitors, but this has allowed me to bump that up to 3.
Mstmdp123dp has built-in usb support in the os. It is a little bit pricey but if you need more than two screens, this is the only way to go. I finally have a dual monitor setup for my surface pro 3 that works really well.
Cons
The displayport hub is incapable of running more than one monitor. Problems with the hub go from blue to amber to blue then amber. This is not convenient if the ports on your laptop are near the front.
This thing is straight-up garbage. Also completely worthless. Flawed technology, should be pulled from shelves. Startech's qa is not good enough.
Every time i plug the thing in, i get screens flashing on/off until i unplug it. The adapter continually needs refreshed or reset. If my computer goes to sleep, it freezes the os, requiring a hard reboot.

Price
The price is a little higher than what i was hoping for.
Packaging/appearance
Don't cheap out on the cables/adapters as you will pay as i did.
Then, i realized i was running all 4 screens off of the chincy intel on-board graphics card in my laptop.
Competitiveness
I am able to drive 3 monitors at 1920x1200 @ 60hz each.
I bought two of these and two startech mini display port extension cables - perfect combination for both my home and office setups.
Tried a cheaper adapter first and it did not work at all.
I found a longer 110v cord for the surface charger.
