It looks like that cheap cable was more than i had bargained originally. It seems a mini displayport connector isn't too common outside of a few macintosh computers. I was glad to find this decent adapter cable to use to connect my external display.

I use the suggested settings for the 2nd display resolution in macos, and the cable is working perfectly now for quite some time.
I bought this to add on an external 4k monitor to my 2015 imac with a 27" retina display built-in.
I have a device that only has mini-dp out, and doesn't support hdmi.
Once i received this cable all those issues went away and then some, no sluggish performance either with my productivity apps.

Pay the extra money for quality cables it’s worth the investment!

Turns out its a chipset issue but it meant i needed an actual display port cable for it

That was a while back and when i tried it on my 4k display i kept getting flickering and clicking plus i could not get another refresh rate than 24hz at any resolution
