Pros & Cons
Pros
The seat is adjustable to fit your height and weight. The cushion is firm and the seat back could be taller. I use a lumbar support cushion due to a back issue.
The chair is light as in the box was 21 pounds, packaged well and no chemical smell. It gives off a premium feel, with the chair never creaking or rattling in any way. This chair fits and has nice support.
Only downside is that the padded arm rests swivel to the left and right. However, that is easily fixable with aftermarket armrest covers. Lots of options if you search for neoprene chair arm pad covers.
This has to be the easiest assembly i ever done. Not show stoppers, but something to be aware of. One one hand.
Cons
The steelcase series 1 is not sturdy. It feels flimsy and of poor build quality. The seat is not flat. It is uncomfortable.
The armrests are the part i hate the most. They move in and out and rotate but they float and have no positional lock. The arms rattle as you drag it across the floor and the and it has an overall plasticky feel to it.
The chair is designed to be toollessly snapped together. This makes disassemble for return impossible. Luckily the assembly is semi-intuitive.
The cushion padding is very average and the lumbar support is nearly non-existent. It is supportive, but not nice if that makes any sense. And lastly, the lumbsar support literally does absolutely nothing for me anyway.
Tension in this chair is nonexistent beyond the locking of the recline. The chair tilts forward when it's fully upright. Backrest tension is not very adjustable.
Highlights
Quality
Excellent lumbar support, easy to move up and down, very firm comfortable seat.
High quality lightweight materials are used which makes it easy to maneuver and carry.
This chair has outlasted two workspaces and a desk.
Two weeks after purchasing this chair the shoulder pain has disappeared.
Price
High scores on consumer reports, and at a reasonable price, this was an upgrade from my grandfather’s 100 year old solid walnut desk chair.
Good price point with highly adjustable settings for arms, height, back, sturdy, the most easier chair to put together
I had cheaped out on it, when i needed a home office chair, and got it for about $200.
You would hope you would get a new product when you pay $470.
Shipping
It came in 3 days and was packaged very well.
The series 1 chair came safely packaged and shipped with no physical damage and arrived in one day which was truly awesome!
I feared it would be damaged in shipping but wasn't.
Packaging/appearance
Arrived in a clean, closed, well protected, sturdy box.
Just keep the packing material until you are certain.
Note: as pictured i've added larger carpet casters (not included) - i'd highly recommend these for carpeted offices to avoid ha... Read More
Competitiveness
It's so comfortable compared to my older chair, which i had thought was comfortable simply because i'd adjusted to its flaws over time.
The quality doesn’t seem better than my $200 office chair but that chair doesn’t have a 12 year warranty.
It's no gesture, of course, but it's much better than any other chair i've had experience with over the last several decades, i... Read More
