Pros
The reckoners by brandon sanderson is out now. The first book in the brandon sanderson series is called steelheart.
I think this book is pretty entertaining as a standalone.
This is a superhero tale wrapped in the ya genre. In what was once the city of chicago, supervillains called epics have taken over. David and 'the reckoners' deal with those who've manifested powers.
Cons
This is the first from the author i've actively disliked. Some of the major plot holes that are simply brushed off by the author.
Much of the dialogue appears to be contrived and inexplicable. The characters are all canned and unoriginal. Character and story development is comparatively unsophisicated compared to the mistborn series.

I bought this series with the intention of gifting it to my 14-year-old niece, who has become an avid reader over the last couple years.
So far i would put it behind skyward and mistborn, but i still am enjoying the series.
The author did a good job with the plot and the characters.

Even though it borrows a lot of dna from american comics youd be hard pressed to find a hero in this that even remotely parallels the powers or personality of a dc or marvel hero
