Pros & Cons
Pros
It effectively records and plays back any cd-r or -rw. Even memorex or imation will do in a pinch. Opc and pma writing functions are quick to respond which cuts down recording waiting time. I especially like and appreciate the ability to use generic d... Read More
This deck is tough to beat (and it seems that many people again are rediscovering the superior sound quality of cds). It's headphone output sounds excellent. Flawless audio reproduction.
This is an excellent cd recorder that replaces a 22 year old jvc that failed. It has two digital input/outputs, optical (aka, toslink or toshlink) and coaxial. Switching between the optical, coax and analog inputs is a front panel control.
Cons
Tascam is not what it used to be, professional? It's now worthless as acd recording unit. Problems include it inputting digital pops at the onset of almost every track.
Will not buy another tascam/teac product again after this experience. There were no instructions on returns. If someone from amazon is reading this i hope they will let me know how to return the unit for a refund.

Basically, the sony didn’t work, which is why this recorder’s most endearing quality is that, it works.
Price
Had a problem with my 20 year old cd recorder and the cost of repair would not have been worthwhile (even if the parts were available).
Competitiveness
It also has features high-quality analogue ins and outs, for the best possible conversions of vinyls, cassettes, etc.
This unit has far exceeded my expectations for performance.

It would be very useful if this unit had a feature that would generate a constant audio level for initial balancing of both left and right channels before starting to record
