Pros & Cons
Pros
The tasman dr-40x is a fantastic value at an outstanding price. Tascam has a long reputation for quality products, and most importantly, great customer service. It's pricey if you're buying it only as a regular recorder but if you do voice over and ro... Read More
Black foam windscreen for indoor use isn’t a bad idea either. Mount it on a tripod with the 1/4 hole on the bottom and it does a great job. Ui is very confusing at first but once you learn it it is fine.
This device features automatic limiting, a full size sd card slot, and two built in directional microphones that have flexible adjustment. I recently got a shotgun mic and have been using that via xlr, it really showcases the convenience of having a s... Read More
Cons
The unit powers up and clicks off after 1-2 seconds on battery. This is a lot of money spent on an item that is defective.
Even the slightest breeze creates a huge distorted * noise in the recording. The only saving grace is that it does produce audio files that meet the bar. The accessory to do that is about fifteen bucks and not even currently available.
Tascam is only open 9-5 weekdays (pacific time) and they offer no chat support. My only option is to sent this in for firmware update and pay another $60-80 for shipping and repair costs. Probably going to return it and stick with my old zoom.
Highlights
Quality
Really good sound quality and sensitive microphones.
High quality recordings, light and portable, and some nice eq/sound customizability built right in.
It records and interfaces with very little fuss.
Definitely purchase a dead cat style windscreen for outdoor use, wind will ruin your audio.
Price
It has proven to be a great value for the money
I tried a $70 voice recorder first and was not satisfied with sound quality or the sensitivity of automated recording.
At the price, you’ll not do much better.
For the price it's hard to beat this little unit.
Shipping
Fast shipping and a great recording unit.
, i haven't learned the ui yet so some of the functions i will have to get to know over a period of time.
Packaging/appearance
I purchased this device used through amazon warehouse and it was was in fairly good condition; as in i couldn't really see anyt... Read More
Competitiveness
Pros:it’s $50 or more (i found a sweet deal) less than its direct competitor (zoom h4n).
Unlike the 44, the dr-40 mics can be positioned in xy or ortf patterns, plus there are the same two xlr jacks with phantom power.
This one is very similar and sounds even better!
Like i t better than the other company i had before this and this one is even cheaper
