Great design, great functionality. This thing is awesome. Tasca products are great.
The 32 gig card is the same card that has worked wonderfully for me in my canon hd camcorder. We need timecode jam sync so students can learn tradition sync sound film production technique.
Cons
Tascam is slow to update its approved media list. The instructions are confusing and the menu system difficult to navigate. Manufacturer's instructions are essentially useless.
It has a software bug relating to phantom power. If the battery gives out unexpectedly, your recording and your backup will be equally useless.
Lack of any way to use rechargeable power pack, much like is included on any consumer or professional camera, such as a nikon. Usb brick defeats the whole idea of small and light.

Quality
The quality of audio is excellent, and the menu options are endless.
Lately, i've been using it to capture nature sounds and i am very happy with the results.
- on the dr-60d you had to arm the recorder with the record button and then push the play button to start recording.
It only occurred with 1 mic, so i cannot blame the 70d outright without further testing.
Price
But that's the price you pay for a metal enclosure.

The other thing i don't like about this unit is the lack of a lithium ion battery backup option like on the 100mk2.
Competitiveness
Overall, great recorder and a no-brainer at this price.
I use this audio recorder along with my blackmagic pocket cinema camera.
Oh well, they probably weren't designing it for my camera.
If you need a soft case, buy a 5x8 soft tablet sleeve.

My only recommendation is to read the manual and perhaps view some youtube so that you can understand its settings if this is your first recorder

I use a sennheiser mk416 shotgun mic which requires phantom power
