Eventually the red button will disappear then the lid can be removed for foods that need to be stopped quickly to prevent overcooking yet have a risk of food going out through the steam release take the entire pressure cooker to the sink and pour cold water on the side not into the pressure controller until the red button disappears if theres no chance of food particles escaping through the steam release then turn the pressure setting to the steam symbol

If on the meat setting move to the vegetable setting first releases some steam and then to the steam symbol

The last pressure cooker i owned was a handmedown from my mum and what a horrible thing it was

I think she bought it new in the 70s and im sure it must have been a wondrous thing back then but by the time i got it it wasnt much to look at and i didnt trust it

One difference is there are no handles to try and align to get it sealed

The instruction manual very basic and picture drawings too small for those of us who dont have fantastic eye sight

The youtube video by tefal is not much use so its down to trial and error
