The amulet is a crime noir meets lovecraft affair, without getting all bogged down in the magic angle. This is what hard-boiled/noir would look like if hp lovecraft wrote mystery novels. The book is an absolute homage to hp lovecraft, as well.
William meikle is one of the most versatile writers working in speculative fiction today, mostly because he isn't afraid to embrace the pulp sensibility that made the genres great. Dan simmons' debut novel song of kali is a great example of this.
