Pros & Cons
Pros
The c# player's guide is an excellent book, period. Great book for the beginning c# programmer. Uses only console applications, which is good for a beginners book.
There's plenty of explanation in plain english on everything a beginner should know. The author has a way of speaking to you in a casual, conversational way. Straightforward production values on nice thick paper.
I'm an surprised how understandable this book is. This book fits that bill. Overall a great book, very satisfied.
Scratch is a visual based language and platform designed to demonstrate coding to people ages 6-adult. Rb whitaker explains the basic tenants of programming concisely. Would recommend to beginners and experience developers alike.
The first 18 chapters are the most important to get you started. The 'in a nutshell' sections act like a short synopsis of what's to come in the chapter. It makes learning like a game rather than a chore.
Cons
The c# in easy steps by mike mcgrath is better than this book. There's creative marketing, and then there's straight up lying. I wish the author's need to discourage hadn't cost me money.

Price
There is plenty bang for the buck, so i went with a 5.
For ~$25, you can't go wrong with the player's guide.
Shipping
The only reason why i took off a star was for delivery.
Also, it was delayed so i ended up getting it late and had to read several levels to catch up with my class.
Competitiveness
I have seen many combination teaching and reference programming manuals similar to this book and it is the style i prefer.
I've felt that i've had to go consult a google/stack overflow search because something was so lightly covered or not covered at... Read More
Some books deal with that with bump-outs and other formatting gimmicks that help you skip the stuff you already know.

Sure you could memorize your way to getting a b or a on that test but unless youve been working in a field which requires constant use of math most of us dont remember much if anything from those classes
