It starts of in a bit faster phase in some parts because its one storyline as opposed to several character based chapters

The aging denigods fight not only the enemy but also fight the demons of their own pasts reviving faith even within their own selfs

Of course it is book 1 of a series but it didnt leave you hanging right in the middle of something like two main characters engaged in a fight falling off a cliff and then having to wait a year or longer for the next book to find out what happened

Although the black gate series is quite good the blend of humor cynicism human drama and plain good writing in empire of the dead takes things to another level

As a rule of thumb i avoid reading the first book in a trilogy until the final book has been written

On too many occasions i have moved on to other books losing interest in the characters and plot while awaiting subsequent releases
