Pros & Cons

Update Pros and Cons

Pros

Subject matter is directed to orchid lovers and people interested in the history surrounding the development of south florida.

John laroche was arrested in 1994 for removing orchids from a florida wildlife preserve. Laroche is an enigmatic and disreputable character who is a serial obsessive.

Cons

Orlean's voice is often extremely distant. The narrator, jennifer jay myers, attempts to inject a humorously sarcastic tone into dry, pedantic histories. The failure of this book is the failure of postmodern american writing in general.

Laroche claims he has mutated lots of plants by putting germinating seeds in the microwave. The author meanders like an orchid vine along unrelated and tedious tributaries of her story line.

Quality

I loved going into the swamps with the author knowing i wasn't the one having to muck along in the mud.

You will be pleased with this book.

Since i grow orchids i am familiar with the types of orchids being referenced.

Orlean’s writing is entertaining with hilarious anecdotes mixed in with the more serious stories of environmental concern.
