I'm actually fairly satisfied with this piece.
It doesn't ramble much, and the ending is quite well in-line with the tone of the tale.
And that is what i found this story at once hauntingly rueful and lingering with the images.

First of all the image of the narrator calling the signalmans attention to him from above seems to me uncanny enough to conjure up the calling of a spectre wandering about the haunted tunnel

The signal man is very short and the book contains a second story called the three strangers by thomas hardy
