The back side of the suitcase is very tough plastic thats coated in rugged nylon so its smooth and wont crack easily

The dopp bag cut in is perfect because its sealed off from the rest of the packing area so god forbid something break open depending on what it is this compartment avoids or reduces any liquids damaging the rest of your clothes

Having several other timbuk2 bags which i have had for years and which have taken pretty rough treatment yet look no worse for the wear i went ahead and ordered this figuring if for some reason i didnt like it i would just send it on back

I know this because we stayed in a motel in the middle of nowhere tn and there was no elevator
