Despite it not working once when the mac started, replugging the usb-a devices into the unit fixed the issue.
One hooked up to my desktop at all time, one near my chromebook which has no usb ports and one in my office laptop bag.

If your primary need is dual monitor support this is an amazing bargain.
I have no idea how amazon can sell this so cheap.

I recently purchased and promptly returned an 8port usba to usbc powered hub because it did not properly handing power sequencing

That is if external power was supplied to the hub prior to system boot up and subsequent usbc power any attached usba peripheral would lose connection with the computer
