You cannot dawdle when you remove the crucible from the heat source: you have to pour your ingot and be done in very short order.

(i should have turned off the furnace, waited until the next day to let the crucible and copper come to equilibrium temperature with the surroundings, removed the crucible and broken it up into pieces with a hammer, and melted the liberated copper slug in a new crucible.  Read Less
