The slots are horizontal so the sharp edge of the blade is not resting on wood

In fact there was a slot for one and the length of the slot was fine but the hole was too small to hold either a ceramic rod the preferred honing tool for japanese and other modern steel knives or an oldfashioned sharpening steel

I had hoped that the kitchen shears slot would accommodate the ceramic honing rod but it was slightly too narrow as well

There were 8 slots for steak knives but they are becoming something of a relic for healthconscious eaters and in my case will not be used

It would have been great if that space could have been used for the kitchen shears a kuhn rikon vegetable peeler etc
