You basically touch the end of the unit against the skin as gently as you like behind the ear is recommended but it seems to work more or less anywhere then there is another button that presses the temperature sensor against the skin and takes the reading sounds complex but it really isnt

The temperature will be displayed for about 10 seconds before resetting itself ready for another go
