I do not know why the peppermint oil didn't work very well, as it is one of the main ingredients in this product.
I wasn't sure how to deal with the problem and though i considered using traps or poisons, i decided against them.
With the paper pellets it looks like it will last several months as long as it is places right up against the wall, under the eaves.

I put the pellets into a fine mesh laundry bag, and deposited the bag into the gap.
It's easy to sprinkle these throughout, they can easily be placed out of the way or where you know rats tend to pass.

I was afraid that if i used poison the mice might die inside the gap and thats a smell you never want in your kitchen or anywhere else
