It is octagonal to help with the grip. I definitely recomend and would replace this if it ever got damaged which is doubtful as this thing is steel.

    This is the size i am used to using in the restaurants i have worked in and it took some hunting to find this even at amazon but i finally did and it is just right for my 10 and 12 inch knives the others you can find at your local stores are just way too short
