It's not too loud and the tamper is very useful. The sound is a bit loud and bothersome, but thankfully it blends so quickly that you don't need to be subjected to the sound for very long. We also enjoy the tamping rod that comes with the unit.

This bender is the one we all thought we were buying years ago. This one is a breeze to use. Price from amazon.

Since the price of these "blenders" is quite hefty i didn't want to be left with a dud.
