However setting up answering machine options using the handset menu is frustrating

Pushing menuselect and then using updown scrolling does not get you directly to a screen for answering machine setup

Then using down arrow scroll to a screen where top line on screen is answering system

Then using down arrow you have to scroll thru several screens until you get to a screen where answering machine setup is on top line and announcement is second line
