Pros & Cons
Pros
The wd red pro nas is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a high-capacity, reliable storage solution. At 18tb, this is the largest drives i have ever purchased. Western digital's red pro is a digital hard drive.
First and foremost, the drive itself operates quietly, a feature that is appreciated in any home setup. The drive hums along like a silent ninja, a much-appreciated trait for any home system. This is partly a product of fractal's proprietary mounting ... Read More
The wd red pro series seamlessly integrates into a nas setup. It delivers consistent and efficient performance for archive and backup purposes.
Cons
Rma guidelines say that i need to ship the bad drive back with 2 inches of bubble wrap or non-movable foam cushioning around it. Western digital warranties are worthless. Buy them from the wd store, save a few dollars, and get your full 5 year warrant... Read More
The boot record of the boot drive is corrupted. It makes a clacking sound on bootup and then cannot be initialized or formatted. Tried another drive (same size/speed internal hdd) using the same pc/cables and no problems.
The drives all make a clicking noise every 5 seconds. It's like having a small washing machine constantly distracting you with random sounds. The other drives just makes a weird repetitive noise and doesn't spin up.
Highlights
Quality
Excellent drive was recognized by the computer immediately after the power and sata connections were made.
And had zero errors on installation, and after a couple of weeks.
The sound itself is fairly low frequency and unobjectionable.
After a month i've got some smart health warnings, which likely mean nothing (mechanical start failures).
Price
This one is very well priced, silent, reliable, and integrates into my synology ds224+ with ease.
Depending on price ($300 is my sweet spot).
Shipping
August 2nd, i finally got an email saying my drive was shipped (no tracking information).
Tracking says they received it on the 24th (this is going from east coast usa to west coast (california).
It was in fact delivered via ups, so i'm not sure what the delay was.
Unfortunate but i blame delivery not the manufacturing.
Competitiveness
I found this was the same price as the 8 tb version.
