Simply place the wire brush with the two sides straddling each grate one at a time. It is a good qulaity brush that is contoured to get between the grates easier.

The bristles are very hard (not soft) and they adequately get off caked on grease and food particles. I switch brushes very often from hearing about bristles falling off and getting stuck on the food. I wish that the bristles were the spiral type.

Even with a lot of time and elbow grease, my grill surface is not clean. To wide for 1 grate and too narrow for 2. Another item of concern is that the bristles deformed on the very first use.
