Pros & Cons
Pros
I'd like to first clarify what these tapes are - they are not chromium (type ii), nor are they metal (type iv) they are the newer formula first produced in the early-mid- 1990's ferro-cobalt also a type ii higher bias than standard inexpensive ferro o... Read More
Record test passed sound quality is remarkable! The 90 minute length is durable and holds up for many, many replays. These tapes have 90 minutes worth of blank recording tapes on them so there are 45 blank minutes for recording on each side.
The directional booklet for my cassette player (a tck670 sony three-head) says record at plus three. This allows the high bias tape to absorb any slight distortion and the dolby lets you record at the higher level.
Cons
Neither tdk nor maxell make hi-bias anymore so all we have is old leftover stock and these sellers exploit that fact. Product not as pictured.
Highlights
Quality
Audio recordings so far have been excellent quality, i expect to get a few years of use out of these.
I used a jvc cassette deck that is over 25 years old to record onto the tapes and the sound quality is outstanding.
Failure to keep dirt away from the internal parts will result in sub-par recordings even with first class tapes.
Avoid the 110 and 120 minute lengths of this product as the tape is thinner and the life span of these longer lengths is signif... Read More
Price
If you pay the current amazon price of $13.
It's what they get for years of $20 for new cds and the nightmare of sam goody.
Cost more than regular cassette tapes but also sound better.
They're a little bit more expensive, but worth it.
Shipping
The product arrived on time and all of the tapes in the set worked fine.
Audio cassettes are hard to come by these days but these were great.
Packaging/appearance
Came in great condition and seller even added one.
The package was not a factory maxell 5-pack as show in the picture, but 5 new, sealed tapes repacked in clear plastic by the seller.
Came as 5 individual boxes wrapped in bubble tape.
Unpacked one cassette to test recording: cassete box was cracked.
Competitiveness
These are superior to the more commonly available (and much cheaper) ur normal bias cassettes.
Secondly, 99% of consumer reel to reels use 1/4" tape and can be either 2 track (not as popular) or 4 track (more popular) or c... Read More

Most tape manufacturers 34back in the day34 started to move over to this ferrocobalt formula because even back then metal type iv blank tapes were very expensive chromium tapes suffered in reproducing bass

Another 34downside34 to metal tapes besides expense was you needed a tape deck that had tape heads that can handle the metal tape formula and only the higher end decks 3 head 3 motor dual capstan typically had that ability because that tape head composite was expensive so they did not typically include them in their lower end decks

The quality specs close to metal tape and lower cost of ferrocobalt vs metal and far more machines could handle type ii bias made metal close to obsolete at the end of the cassette tapemachine era
