The magnet on the base is solid and definitely strong enough to hold the flashlight horizontally in the unextended position (see photo).

I used cheap batteries at first then replaced with lithium energizer in hopes that the telescopic end would work which it didnt the only reason why this light isnt a 5 star

If the telescoping light is extended however the magnets strength is borderline

I actually had to read the instructions to find out the telescoping light already had the batteries in place and the insulation film just needed to be removed
