Pros & Cons
Pros
This yamaha recorder has a mellower tone to it. It isn't shrill. The sound is crisp, and the intonation is very accurate.
It blows easier than the cheap student models. Great for playing renaissance and baroque music. Can't tell you enough about how much joy it brings.
The 302 is dark brown (almost black), the 312 has a rosewood/ palisander woodgrain, and the 314 has an ebony woodgrain. Price difference between wood and plastic is a no-brainer!

Price
For the money it can't be beat!

Competitiveness

I highly recommend this gem, which is so affordable (comparing to wood) for semi-professional students of the recorder!
My son recently started learning soprano for school so he has a cheap yamaha (the one i learned on eons ago) and the difference is extreme.
But, it is like the difference between driving a bmw and an audi quattro.
