Much later (in post-ww2 era) they were solving it by mass producing aluminum cookware, but early in the century they didn't have any aluminum plants at all… so they began stamping mugs and plates out of cheapest carbon steel (or even cast iron) and covering them with a glass-based enamel to make them more hygienic and less susceptible to rust.  Read Less
