You plug it into a phone jack with a jumper wire not included but we seemed to have accumulated several over the years and it rings loudly whenever the phone would ring

It works well whether you have a phone plugged into it or not and is cheap enough you can get a couple and put one in an empty jack just so you know the phone is ringing

There is also a light that flickers whenever the phone rings

For my dad he may be in another room when the phone rings and wonder what he heard so he looks at this and if he sees the light flicker he knows the phone is ringing
