To save the cost of tap water - and i read that one day the planet will run out of water(!
Only downside is the cost but they seem to be worth it.

Although glass would be heavier and thus more stable it is fragile and the thought of breakage after a drinking glass recently shattered and its smaller shards are still being found a week or so later

These were therefore returned and are to be replaced with larger equivalents
